LABS

Typically each unit will involve at least one lab, with most of the dissection being second semester.  We work predominantly with mammalian organs such as the sheep brain, cow heart and cow eye.  We will do a large animal dissection in the spring for our work with the digestive, circulatory, and respiratory systems.  You will have the choice of a fetal pig or an adult cat, with 2-3 students per pig, 3-4 students per cat.  Students of IB Biology will do the pig in that curriculum, so they often elect to work on a cat to avoid duplication.  The pigs were never born- taken from pregnant sows that go to market.  The cats are euthanized strays from community animal control efforts.  All specimens are thoroughly embalmed and preserved.  No blood or blood products are contacted.

There are NO formal lab reports for this class.  You will NOT need a separate lab notebook. Yay!

VOLUNTARY LAB DONATIONS

The limited budget provided to us by the school and county coupled with the high expense of our lab work requires me to ask for a "Voluntary Lab Donation" from each student. This request is in the amount of $20 per student. Cash is fine. Checks should be made out to St. Pete High. These donations are voluntary, and a student's inability to help with our lab expenses does not in any way affect their lab experience. Any amount is gladly accepted, with $20 being simply a guideline.
